About the
Timberon
Development Council
During the fall
of 2000, a group of concerned property owners came
together to discuss the formation of a civic group to
develop ideas for
Timberon concerning
tourism, economic development and grant funding for the
betterment of the community.
Since the demise of the Timberon Property Owners Association, there
was not a specific group totally focused on the needs of the
community.
By the end of that year, the group had elected officers, started
the process required for establishing a 501C3 tax status and
the writing of bylaws. Officers are elected
annually
in November and take
office January of the following year.
It was in 2001, that a Rural Economic Grant from the US Forest
Service was written and awarded to the Council for the
express purpose of writing a Community Action Plan. This
plan placed the Council in a better position for qualifying
for grant funding.
Management of
the funds was provided through the South Central Mountain
Resources Conservation and Development Council. With their
help a facilitator was hired and the work
began.
Many interviews and
meetings later a survey was developed and presented to the
community for their overall input. The survey established
the priorities for the focus of the Council. The issues
concerned; water, forest/fire, economic development and
tourism.
A copy of the Community Action Plan can be obtained from the
Library in Timberon or the
Timberon Development
Council Office.
Since the inception of the Council, the group has been awarded the
administration of a Wildland Urban Interface Grant from the
NM Forestry Division for the express purpose of tree
thinning on private land. The group has actively worked
with the BLM in creating a firebreak on the southern
boundaries of the community and located on McGregor Range.
The Council is mailing out
information
periodically to different
sections within
Timberon to encourage property owners to take advantage of
the grant funds available for thinning. An application for
the funding, a description of the grant and a list of
contractors actively working in Timberon are available on
this link. Any questions can be addressed to:

The County of Otero has awarded a contract to the Council for the
maintenance and up keep of the airstrip. Insurance has been
provided through fundraising and to help with the
maintenance, the County has given the Council a tractor and
mower. Recently the airstrip was compacted to provide a
better surface for the summer months.
In the past,
the Council has sponsored Robin Hood Days, a Summer
Children’s Theater Workshop, Firewise Workshop, US Forest
Service Site Visits, Grant Writing Workshop and monthly
fundraising dinners at the Lion’s Club.
The Council meets the 2nd Saturday of each month,
10 am in the Timberon Lodge. All property owners are
considered members and are welcome at any meeting. |
